Tubal Ligation / Female Sterilisation

Tubal Ligation is a form of Female Sterilisation. Which is an operation to permanently prevent pregnancy.
In the operation the fallopian tubes are blocked or sealed to prevent eggs from reaching the sperm and thus becoming fertilised.

Eggs are still released from the ovaries as normal, but they will be absorbed naturally back into the woman's body.
Almost any woman can be sterilised, but it should only be considered by women who do not want any more children or do not want children at all.

Once you are sterilised it's very difficult to reverse it, so consider all options before making your decision.

Pros

  • Tubal ligation is more than 99% effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy.
  • It does not affect your sex drive or interfere with sexual activity.
  • It will not affect your hormone levels.

Cons

  • It provides no protection against STIs, so you may still need to use condoms
  • It cannot be easily reversed.
  • It can fail – the fallopian tubes can spontaneously rejoin making you fertile again (this is rare, but does happen).
  • If pregnancy occurs after the operation, there is an increased risk of an ectopic pregnancy - when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb.
