The Hormonal Vaginal Ring - Nuvaring

The hormonal vaginal ring (also called by a brand name the NuvaRing) is a small soft, plastic ring that you place directly inside your vagina.
It then releases a continuous dose of the hormones oestrogen and progestogen into your bloodstream to prevent pregnancy.
You can begin using the ring at any time during your monthly cycle as long as you are not already pregnant.

Leave the ring in place for 21 days, then remove it and have a 7-day ring-free break. You will be protected against pregnancy during the 7 day break. Then you put a new ring in for another 21 days, and repeat.
You'll be protected against pregnancy straight away if you insert it on the first day of your period (the first day of your menstrual cycle).

Pros

  • One ring stays in for 3 weeks - you dont have to think about contraception every day.
  • The ring will still be fully effective even if you are sick (vomit) or have diarrhoea.
  • The ring may also ease premenstrual symptoms, and bleeding will probably be lighter and less painful.

Cons

  • Some women report temporary side effects, including more vaginal discharge, brest tenderness and headaches.
  • The ring can sometimes come out on its own, rinse it in warm water and put it back as soon as possible.
  • The ring does not protect against STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) so you may need to use a condom as well.

(Perfect use means using the method correctly each time. Typical is when you do not always use it correctly)
